Ships just get bigger: 2 weeks after the massive MSC Bruxelles' visit,
another 1,000-plus-footer on the way
It seems the honor of being the largest container ship to call on
Charleston ports is a fleeting one.
Just two weeks after the MSC Bruxelles claimed the title July 20, a ship is
due to arrive Wednesday at Wando Terminal that's just as big but can carry
more containers. It's a tie, or a new high-water mark, depending on how
"largest" is measured.

The MSC Bruxelles is the largest container ship to ever call at
Charleston's port. The 9,200-TEU, 20-foot equivalent unit Bruxelles can
draft up to 49 feet.
"Records continue to fall," said Bryon Miller, spokesman for the State
Ports Authority. "The ships are getting bigger, and that's being
demonstrated every day."
The MSC Bruxelles and the newer MSC Sindy are each just over 1,100 feet
long and 150 wide, but the Sindy is configured to carry more cargo.
In Hampton Roads, where the Sindy was due today, The Virginian-Pilot
newspaper called her "a Godzilla-scale vessel."
The Sindy isn't the largest ship of any kind to call on Charleston -- the
cruise ship Queen Mary II, which called on Charleston in 2006, was 27 feet
longer and 9 feet wider -- but she's big enough to make an aircraft carrier
self-conscious. The Sindy, like the Bruxelles, is 217 feet longer and 50
feet wider than the aircraft carrier Yorktown, the centerpiece of Patriots
Point Naval and Maritime Museum.
The Sindy can hold the equivalent of 9,580 20-foot-long shipping
containers, a measurement called a TEU, while the Bruxelles can carry under
9,200 TEUs, according to The Containershipping Newsletter.
In practice, most shipping containers going in and out of East Coast ports
are the 40-foot variety, but the TEU is the industry standard for
quantifying capacity.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we broke 10,000 (TEUs) within the year," said
John Cameron, executive director of the Charleston Branch Pilots Association.
He said the largest container ships calling on Charleston don't come fully
loaded with containers and fuel. The Sindy would need a depth of 49 feet
fully loaded, and 48 feet at high tide is Charleston's limit, he said. That
limit allows for a 10 percent depth buffer.
"We have gotten requests from shipping companies to handle ships much
larger than this -- 50 percent larger in terms of container capacity,"
Cameron said. "I'm certain that we'll be handling ships that are lightly
loaded, because we can handle all the dimensions except for depth."
The increasing size of ships is driving the push to deepen Charleston's
shipping channel to 50 feet at low tide. The current federally-authorized
depth is 45 feet.
Going 5 feet deeper could take a decade and cost about $310 million, the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimated. A feasibility study began in June.

Charleston, SPA can back cruise line in suit
Tuesday, August 2, 2011
A judge has granted the city of Charleston and the State Ports Authority
the ability to support Carnival Cruise Lines in a lawsuit brought against
the company by residents and environmental groups.
The permission was granted late last week by Judge Kristi Lea Harrington.
A lawsuit filed earlier this year alleges Carnival's cruise liners are a
public nuisance and violate city rules and regulations. The lawsuit also
asks a judge to declare it illegal for the SPA to use Union Pier for a new
$35 million passenger cruise terminal.
SPA spokesman Byron Miller said in a statement Monday that the lawsuit is
baseless.
Last year, Carnival began basing its Carnival Fantasy in Charleston,
inaugurating a year-round cruise season in the city.
