23% export growth puts South Carolina at No. 17
Port officials: More than $20B in goods sold to 192 countries

While economists praised container volume growth at Wednesday's Economic
Outlook Conference, maritime officials announced another stride on local
docks: 23 percent growth in exports in 2010.

The more than $20 billion in goods sold to 192 countries last year placed
South Carolina at No. 17 in the country for exports.

The three products with largest increases were cotton yarn and fab-ric,
optical and medical equipment, and inorganic chemicals and rare earth
metals, according to state officials.

The state's top 10 export industries last year were: vehicles, machin-
ery,
rubber, plastics, electrical machinery, organic chemicals, paper and
paperboard, optics and medical equipment, wood pulp, and iron and steel.

Canada outpaced Germany as the state's top export market in 2010,
purchasing nearly $3.2 billion in products to Germany's $2.9 billion,
officials said.

China climbed from No. 5 in 2009 to No. 3 in 2010 and more than doubled
its
purchases to nearly $2.2 billion.

Gov. Nikki Haley, in a written statement, called the news "only the
beginning of what we will continue to see in South Carolina when we work
on
improving and modernizing our ports system and market our great state to
the world."

State Ports Authority CEO Jim Newsome noted that export growth generates
jobs across the state in sectors ranging from manufacturing to
agriculture.
