Port business stays solid: Post-recession bounce has slowed, but container traffic up 7% in Feb. By John McDermott jmcdermott@postandcourier.com Thursday, March 24, 2011
The post-recession bounce at the Port of Charleston has lost some of its spring, but the waterfront is still busier than it was a year ago.
The number of containers that came through State Ports Authority terminals was up 7 percent in February compared to the same period of 2010, its was announced Wednesday.
The maritime agency said its docks handled the equivalent of 108,994 20-foot-long shipping containers last month. For the SPA's 2011 fiscal year, which began in July, volume is up more than 12 percent over the corresponding period of fiscal 2010.
Noncontainerized "breakbulk" business at the ports of Charleston and Georgetown was up more than 44 percent since July 1, to 657,528 tons. That labor-intensive category includes automobiles and heavy machinery.
The SPA said it anticipates "continued but moderate growth" through 2011. Jim Newsome, chief executive officer, said the port is "headed in the right direction," though it's not moving as fast as it was.
The SPA saw a burst of year-over-year gains in 2010 as businesses and consumers felt confident enough to start replenishing their stock rooms and closets. The agency has been predicting for several months that the pace eventually would taper off.
SPA spokesman Byron Miller said Wednesday that the export business for items such as agricultural products and Asian-bound manufacturing goods remains "very strong" from Charleston.
"That's one part of the story," he said.
The port industry is reining in its growth projections partly because of the rising costs of commodities. Oil prices, for instance, pose a triple threat because they affect manufacturers, shipping lines and shoppers.
"That's a direct impact both on the supply chain and on the consumer," Miller said.
Skyrocketing cotton and grain prices also are worrisome because they too affect household spending, which in turn drives shipping volume, especially imports.
Miller said the U.S. container business is expected to tack on about 4 percent to 6 percent growth this year. The Port of Charleston is holding its own, he added.
"We're still doing well, but with every piece of business we get today we're having to earn," he said. "Our goal is to grow faster than the market."
