GA, SC meet over shared port on Savannah River By RUSS BYNUM Associated Press Tuesday, March 8, 2011
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Port officials from Georgia and South Carolina are meeting to discuss concerns over the future of a proposed $500 million shipping terminal on the Savannah River that both states have worked on since 2007.
The meeting Tuesday in Savannah is the first between the states’ port chiefs since South Carolina ports chairman Bill Stern wrote a letter last month saying Georgia’s plans for deepening the Savannah harbor would harm efforts to build a shared port in Jasper County, S.C.
Stern wrote that he sees no reason to keep spending money on the Jasper County project unless Georgia agrees to change its deepening proposal.
Georgia port chairman Alec Poitevint, who serves with Stern on the joint port’s two-state board, says the Savannah harbor deepening won’t harm any plans for Jasper County.
