Current Articles: (1/13) Grain export hub opens on local port terminal Staff report - Thursday, January 13, 2011
A Midwest company has opened a grain-handling operation on a local shipping terminal.
The State Ports Authority said today that The Scoular Co.’s new facility in Mount Pleasant could export more than 25 million pounds of product annually.
The operation is based on the Wando Welch Terminal. It is set up to load grain from farms across the region into containers for shipment to countries around the world. Products such as soybean, winter wheat and corn are increasingly being transported abroad by container, the SPA said.
“This operation will serve increasing export demand and generate significant new business through the port,” said Jim Newsome, president and chief executive officer of the state maritime agency.
Based in Omaha, Neb., Scoular is a $3.5 billion a year business with more than 60 locations across North America.
