Federal, state and local authorities are looking for an Indonesian man who
deserted a cruise ship while it was docked in Charleston.

Achmad Fajar Priyadi, 25, was a crew member on the Holland America Cruise
ship Maasdam on May 16 when he left for shore leave some time after 7:30
a.m. and failed to return before the ship departed at 5 p.m., according to
a Charleston police incident report.

Priyadi left his passport with the ship, as is protocol when crew members
take shore leave. The only identification he would have is a ship ID photo
and an I-95 card issued by U.S. Customs, the report says.

Authorities investigating Priyadi's disappearance do not think he is a
danger to anyone in the community, according to Robert Fencel, port
director for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Protections are in place to keep anyone who might be a danger from working
aboard ships that dock here or from leaving the ships, Fencel said.

Fencel declined to say why Priyadi may have wanted to enter the United
States. He said he was restricted from saying much about the case because
it is an active and open investigation.

Foul play is not suspected, he said.
