Illegal loot seized at port had retail value of $415,306

Staff Report
Published Dec. 21, 2009

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized 701 cartons of counterfeit
shirts and other merchandise at the Port of Charleston this month.

Counterfeit Gap and Faded Glory polo shirts, along with other commingled
merchandise, was taken on Dec. 3, according to U.S. Customs’ public affairs
department. The shipment had a total domestic value of $28,129 and a
suggested retail price of $415,306.

Customs officers discovered the shipment of counterfeit merchandise in a
container that was selected for examination. A total of 10,842 boys polo
shirts bearing the Gap logo and 8,014 men’s polo shirts bearing the Faded
Glory logo were seized.

Border protection agents play a lead role in protecting American consumers
and domestic businesses by enforcing intellectual property rights laws,
said the agency’s director in Charleston, Robert A. Fencel, in a statement.

“This seizure is an excellent example of the steps CBP has taken in the
area of enforcing IPR laws,” Fencel said. “We will continue to educate our
officers and work with our stakeholders in the trade community to continue
these efforts to combat the importation of illegitimate trade items.”

He said intellectual property rights enforcement has been designated as a
top priority among trade issues.
