CURRENT NEWS: Savannah Port: Federal funds for SHEP are safe, officials say
U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga., and U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, R-Ga.-1, along with Georgia Ports Authority leadership urged Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works
R.D. James to keep the Savannah Harbor funding on track at a meeting on Feb. 14, 2019.
Federal funds for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, or SHEP, are safe for now, according to U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-1).
Carter said he had been assured by officials at the Office of Management and Budget “those funds are not going to be touched,” Carter said.
The issue has arisen due to President Trump’s declaration Friday of a national emergency over Mexico/U.S. border issues. There have been some concerns the president will use the port project money to build
a wall along the Southwest border.
U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and David Perdue, R-Ga., and Carter, urged U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works R.D. James on Thursday to keep SHEP on track for the next fiscal year at
a meeting with Georgia Ports Authority leadership in Isakson’s Washington, D.C., office.
As planning for the fiscal year 2020 budget continues, Isakson, Perdue and Carter thanked James for the administration’s focus on infrastructure and for ensuring the project received the full $101 million
funding needed to keep the work on track in fiscal year 2019, as well as the need for additional funding this year. They also stressed the port’s continued record-breaking success that supports jobs, trade and the economy.
Carter said the balance of federal dollars needed for the project is about $250 million. Carter said they will ask for about $130 this year and the balance the following year.
Carter noted there is no benefit to the project until it is complete.
“Let’s finish it,” Carter said.
Carter said all of Georgia’s House representatives on both sides of the aisle have been part of the push for funding.
“Sanford Bishop, John Lewis -- everyone has,” Carter said. Bishop is a Democrat representing the 2nd District. Lewis, is also a Democrat. He represents the 5th District.
Isakson said the Port of Savannah is critical to the state.
“The Port of Savannah is critical to Georgia’s economy, to successful global trade and to the thousands of jobs it supports,” said Isakson. “We appreciate the administration’s continued attention and actions
to support this vital infrastructure project, and we will continue to press our case for its full, on-time funding.”
