Current Articles: (5/14/18) Japanese shipping company charged with polluting NC waters

Vessel illegally dumped ‘oily waste’ while headed to Wilmington

WILMINGTON -- A Japanese shipping company that delivered steel products to Wilmington was convicted and sentenced Thursday on charges of obstruction of justice and falsification of records, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Nitta Kisen Kaisha, which owned and operated the vessel M/V Atlantic Oasis, was ordered to pay a $1 million fine after inspectors found that the company’s engineers illegally discharged oily waste from the vessel’s fuel and lubrication purifier systems and from the ship’s bilge holding tank and bilges, the release stated.

During a May 17, 2017, Coast Guard inspection while the vessel was docked in Wilmington, a crew member showed inspectors where hoses used for the discharges were hidden and Chief Engineer Jihnyun Youn “lied to the inspectors about the existence of a Sounding Log, which is typically used in the industry to record the fluid levels of various tanks in the engine room,” the release said.

Youn was separately sentenced to a year of probation and a $5,500 fine.

Laura Blair, vice president of external affairs at the N.C. State Ports Authority, said the incident did not happen at the Port of Wilmington.

“Wilmington was the first port of call for the vessel after the incident,” she said.

According to the website Vesseltracking.net, the Atlantic Oasis is a 21,290-ton bulk carrier built in 2011.

The cold front will move SE over the northern waters  tonight, and then stall and slowly weaken over the northern  waters, or along 40N, Wed and Wed night. A weak cold front will  move S into the northern waters later Thu and Thu night, stall  over the northern portion Fri, return N as a warm front Fri  night, and then lift N of the area Sat. Yet another cold front  will approach the NW portion Sat night. Otherwise, a high  pressure ridge will prevail from the Georgia and South Carolina  coasts eastward toward Bermuda through the period. Weak low  pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico will slowly lift N  toward the SE states over the next few days.    $$
