CURRENT ARTICLES:  (03/06/18) 6,000 pounds of harmless sulfuric acid in sea after ship headed for Charleston loses containers

The Maersk Line ship that had at least 70 cargo containers either collapse or go overboard during rough seas on Saturday is now anchored off the Charleston coast as officials review the losses.

"The vessel is currently at anchor in Charleston with the surveyor and U.S. Coast Guard on board to assess damages to cargo and vessel," Maersk said in a statement. "Once the survey is completed we will coordinate a plan to secure berthing and needed resources to work normal cargo operations, including damaged units."

Maersk, the world's largest shipping line, said it will contact customers "with direct impact to find the best solution for the handling of their cargo."

The Maersk Shanghai contacted Coast Guard officials at 8:15 p.m. Saturday to say between 70 and 73 containers collapsed or went into the Atlantic Ocean about 17 miles off the North Carolina coast. The ship was on its way to the Port of Charleston and was traveling through a powerful nor'easter storm that produced hurricane-force winds and waves of up to 40 feet.

Maersk said all of its crew members are safe and it is not aware of any environmental issues related to the overboard containers.

A State Ports Authority spokeswoman said the agency has no information about what is inside the cargo boxes that went overboard. A report in the Virginian-Pilot newspaper said one of the containers had nearly 6,000 pounds of sulfuric acid in barrels. A Coast Guard spokesman said the sulfuric acid does not pose an environmental risk because it dissolves in saltwater.

The World Shipping Council said in a 2017 report that, on average, 1,582 cargo containers are lost at sea each year. About two-thirds of those losses were attributed to catastrophic events, such as storms. The global shipping industry transports about 130 million containers each year.

Maersk Shanghai is a 1,063-foot-long ship capable of carrying up to 10,081 cargo containers. The vessel, which was built in 2016, is flagged in Liberia.

Maersk and its subsidiaries are the largest customer at the Port of Charleston, accounting for about 19 percent of the State Ports Authority's annual revenues, according to the most recent data available.
