Nucor posts $133M loss Staff and wire reports Friday, July 24, 2009
CHARLOTTE — Nucor Corp., the largest U.S. steel maker by production, said Thursday it lost $133 million in its second quarter as demand remained weak amid the economic downturn.
It was Nucor's second straight quarterly loss, but an improvement over the previous quarter's results and beat Wall Street expectations. The company said it expects more improvement in the third quarter, despite high raw-material costs.
The global recession has hammered Nucor and other steel producers, undermining key steel buyers in the construction, automotive and industrial equipment industries.
But prices and production of the metal have risen in recent weeks, though from levels far lower than a year earlier, when surging demand produced the most lucrative market for the metal in decades.
Nucor's second-quarter loss amounted to 43 cents per share. That compares with a profit of $580.8 million, or $1.94 a share, in the year-earlier period.
Revenue fell 65 percent to $2.48 billion from $7.09 billion.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected a steeper loss of 59 cents a share on lower revenue of $2.35 billion. Those estimates typically exclude one-time items.
In April, Nucor posted its first loss in the company's history.
The steelmaker has been a major employer in the Charleston area since the mid-1990s.
It operates a large mill on the Cooper River in Berkeley County with more than 800 workers whose compensation is tied directly to production levels. It also has operations in Darlington, Florence and Swansea
Shares of Nucor rose 7 cents to close Thursday at $44.35.
