(3/28/16) Port's cold storage facility to be finished in summer
WILMINGTON -- A cold storage facility at the Port of Wilmington that's hoping to be a hub for the export of North Carolina-produced meat and produce should be up and running by the summer,
according to the company that will operate the facility.
Chuck McCarthy, president of Port of Wilmington Cold Storage, a subsidiary of USA Investco, said the building, which had a groundbreaking last June, should be finished and operational by the
end of June or early July. The company originally hoped the building would be finished by April, but heavy rains in the autumn and spring pushed the timeline back, McCarthy said.
"We had some construction delays," he said. "We're anxious to get going."
While walking around the shell of the building as crews trucked in and flattened the dirt sub-floor, McCarthy said the company has already attracted "three or four" clients "who could fill
this place out. I'm getting a lot of interest."
That floor is something of a technological marvel, he said. Once the dirt is down, strips of an antifreeze system will be laid under insulation -- which now is stacked in 15-foot-high piles
outside the building -- before being covered by cement.
"It's so the ground under the building doesn't freeze and warp the floor," he said. "There's a lot of technology that goes into these buildings that people aren't aware of."
The building, which will be about 101,000 square feet, can grow to as much as 350,000 square feet if business warrants, McCarthy said.
"We're building for expansion," he said.
McCarthy said the company plans to hire 20 employees at the outset, but hopes to have 80 to 100 after the first year of operation.
The building will have the capability of storing goods that need to be kept refrigerated or frozen. It will also be able to "blast freeze" products within 24 hours, McCarthy said.
Once completed, the facility will house primarily food waiting to be exported. The facility will mean the state's producers of protein products -- including pork and poultry, which are major
industries in North Carolina -- can ship from Wilmington rather than a port in another state.
McCarthy said he believes the facility will have a symbiotic relationship with the port. The facility will be the only cold storage building on a port property on the East Coast, port officials
have said.
"We're just an additional tool the port can offer to its customers," McCarthy said.
The $14.5-million project is being partly financed by Chinese investors as part of a federal program known as the Immigrant Investor Program, or "EB-5," where foreign nationals receive a U.S.
green card for investing their money.
