<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The federal Office of Management and Budget on Wednesday gave its approval to a plan to deepen Charleston Harbor to 52 feet, a key part of the State Ports Authority’s initiative to lure large containerships to Charleston.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The proposal now moves to Congress to be considered for possible funding.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The approval was announced late Thursday afternoon by U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham’ office.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

“<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">This is fantastic news for the Charleston port and our state’s economy,” Graham, R-S.C., said in a written statement. “I appreciate OMB Director Shaun Donovan for ensuring a speedy sign-off and helping us keep this project moving forward.”

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The budget agency’s approval was expected and signals support from President Barack Obama’s administration. Congress is expected this fall to start funding the federal government’s $202 million share of the cost.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">South Carolina legislators have already put aside the state’s $307 million share to deepen the Port of Charleston’s shipping channel to 52 feet from 45 feet. That would give the state the deepest port along the East Coast to accommodate larger ships that will start sailing the Panama Canal when an expansion of that waterway is completed this year.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">Vessels that can carry between 5,000 and 10,000 20-foot-long cargo boxes already make up about one-third of the Port of Charleston’s traffic. Jim Newsome, the SPA’s president and CEO, has said that likely will increase to two-thirds in coming years.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The harbor deepening is expected to be completed by 2020, about the same time the SPA will open a new container terminal at the former Navy base in North Charleston.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

“<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">Ensuring the Charleston Harbor deepening project remains on track has been and remains a top priority for me,” Graham said. “We’ve come a long way in a very short amount of time.”

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The Charleston Harbor dredging is the first in the Army Corps of Engineers’ history to go through the agency’s new “Civil Works Planning” process, which allowed the initial studies to be completed in four years, about half the time such projects previously took.<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New"">
