Feds suggest $12M for harbor deepening
Monday, July 6, 2009

Thanks to recent federal action, the Port of Charleston's already deep
harbor could become even more attractive to modern, larger shipping vessels.

The Dredge Atlantic, the world's largest dredge, is at work in Charleston
Harbor. This harbor and the one in Georgetown could get deeper, thanks to a
suggested allocation of $12 million by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The U.S. House of Representatives suggested allocating $12 million for
deepening studies and channel maintenance in both Charleston and
Georgetown. The project could take Charleston beyond its 45 feet within the
harbor and 47 feet in the entrance channel.

Harbor deepening becomes increasingly important in port marketing as
shipping lines prepare for the Panama Canal expansion timed for 2014, a
move that's expected to bring larger and heavier container ships to U.S. ports.

Charleston Harbor could also receive $10.7 million for maintenance dredging
and nearly $1.8 million for dredge material disposal facilities. Georgetown
could receive $1 million in maintenance dredging as well.

The action began in the House Energy and Water Appropriations subcommittee
and must receive approval from both the House and Senate.
