<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The board of the maritime agency on Wednesday voted to name its future $700 million container terminal on the former Navy base after state Sen. Hugh Leatherman, president pro tempore of the S.C. Senate.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">The biggest of all, perhaps, was lining up $300 million in state money to help pay for the planned deepening of the Charleston Harbor so that it can accommodate supersized cargo ships.

<span-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Courier New";color:#1F497D">As chairman of the Senate finance committee, Leatherman also secured funding for an access road that will connect U.S. Interstate 26 with the new North Charleston terminal. The veteran lawmaker supported the SPA’s Inland Port in Greer and the Jasper Ocean Terminal that South Carolina plans to build with Georgia on the Savannah River, Stern said.

The SPA said it is the only permitted container terminal being built on the U.S. East or Gulf coasts. When the first phase is completed around 2020, it will increase the port’s container-handling capacity by 50 percent.
