<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">On the heels of its decision to boost an investment in a cold-storage facility serving its Charleston port,
the State Ports Authority is considering the benefits of a similar refrigerated warehouse at its inland port in Greer.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">"It's in the idea phase," said Jim Newsome, SPA president and chief executive officer, adding that such a facility
would be built by a private business, not the SPA.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">The news follows last week's vote by the SPA board of directors to increase the amount of money it will spend on expansion of a North Charleston cold-storage warehouse
to $14 million. The expansion will nearly triple the size of New Orleans Cold Storage's building - on property the company leases from the state maritime agency - to about 150,000 square feet.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Newsome said a refrigerated warehouse in Greer makes sense because the site is "very close to the source of
a lot of refrigerated poultry and cargo" and in a dense
transportation corridor served by nearby Interstate 85 and about 40 trains each day. Norfolk Southern Corp. operates overnight shuttles between Greer and the Port of Charleston.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">"We actually have had some discussions about getting the railroad to offer what we call protected
service, basically being able to have a power pack on a train to run a refrigerated container," Newsome said. "So we will likely try that within the next year or so to see if that can work on an overnight train service."
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">He said he predicts much of the refrigerated business at the inland port could come from domestic chicken and
turkey processing facilities in the Upstate and North Carolina. Newsome will have a chance to pitch the inland port to that market when the U.S. Poultry and Egg Export Council holds its
annual convention next June in Charleston.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Poultry accounts for 2.2 percent of all
refrigerated cargo moving through the Charleston port, with 14,267 20-foot containers exported in fiscal 2014, according to SPA spokeswoman Erin Dhand. To date, no refrigerated cargo moves through the inland port.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">"Most of what you're looking to do in a place like Greer is not just in international play, but that's got substantial
domestic play as well," he said. "Logistically, the closer you can get facilities to where the cargo is originating, the better off you are."
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">That's true for both time- and temperature-sensitive cargo as well as traditional freight. Parton Lumber, for
example, is looking at the inland port as a way to increase efficiency, according to a report by The Daily Courier newspaper in Rutherford County, N.C. The lumber company - located in Rutherfordton, N.C., about 55 miles from the inland port - has been sending
containers of its hardwood lumber 245 miles to the Port of Charleston for export.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">"Saving time and increasing efficiency is helpful to our business," Patrick Parton, the company's co-president,
told the newspaper.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">If a refrigerated warehouse eventually is built, it would not be the first for the Greer site. Nordic Cold
Storage used to operate a cold-storage facility on the site, but the SPA spent about $2 million to buy out that company's lease so the building could be demolished. Newsome said the old facility would have impeded construction of the inland port.
<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">The $46.5 million inland port, which opened last year, is a railyard where containers are loaded between trucks
and trains. One of its biggest customers is carmaker BMW in Greer.
