Navy destroyer Truxtun arrives Sunday
Staff report

The Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer - the Truxtun - will arrive in
the Port of Charleston's downtown passenger terminal early Sunday for a
week of activities ahead of its commissioning late next week.

The ship will be open for public tours on Monday and Tuesday at the
passenger terminal, just below the City Market.

On Monday, the ship will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Tuesday, the ship will be open for tours from 8 a.m. to noon. before
moving up the Cooper River for its commissioning, at the Naval Weapons
Station in Goose Creek, Sat., April 25.

The commissioning ceremony is by invitation only. There is no public
access inside the station gates.

During the week, sailors from the Truxtun will participate in a number of
community outreach activities including helping out at Patriot Point's
Yorktown Museum and at a local food bank.

The new destroyer honors Commodore Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822) who
embarked upon a seafaring career at age 12. When the U.S. Navy was
organized, he was selected as one of its first six captains was assigned
command of the USS Constellation. Truxtun is the 53rd of 62 planned
Arleigh Burke class destroyers.

Cmdr. Timothy R. Weber, a native of Decatur, Ga., will become the first
commanding officer of the ship and will lead the crew of 276 officers and
enlisted personnel. The 9,200-ton Truxtun is 510 feet in length. Four gas
turbine engines can power the ship in excess of 30 knots.
