Elba
Liquifaction Company contributes funds to repair County bridge on McQueen’s Trail

Walden with Kinder Morgan, after check presentation Friday to the Chatham County Commissioners
By Lou Phelps, Savannah Business Journal
November 7, 2014 – The new joint venture company established to develop a $1.5 billion expansion of the import/export natural gas business
on Elba Island presented a check today to help Chatham County with some bridge and road repairs needed on some on the river islands.
On behalf of KinderMorgan, the parent company of Southern LNG, which owns and operates the natural gas plant on Elba Island in the Savannah
River, Stephen R. Heard, Director – LNG Division of Southern LNG, and Scott J. Walden, Sr., Manager – Compliance & Regulatory Affairs, were on hand at the Chatham County Commission meeting on Friday to present a check to help with infrastructure repairs on
the McQueen’s Trail where erosion has affected a bridge.
Accepting the check on behalf of the County was Steve Proper, Parks and Recreation Services Manager, who is responsible for maintaining
the McQueen’s Trail.
KinderMorgan owns a wide array of natural gas pipelines across the U.S.
A new joint venture project between KinderMorgan and Shell Oil Company – Elba Liquifaction Company, Inc. has been formed to invest $1.5
billion on Elba Island to expand the KinderMorgan plant to both import natural gas and export natural gas as the United States continues to develop more supply.
The check today was from the new Elba Liquifaction Company division. This is the same group which recently contributed $125,000 to the
City of Savannah to purchase a new fireboat to be used on the Savannah River in case of any type of fire emergency.
The expanded natural gas plant project, which is now before FERC for approval, will reportedly provide 800 jobs in Savannah over a two
to three year construction process, and then 100 permanent, high-paying jobs including engineering and other highly skilled positions.
They are hoping for FERC approval by next spring, according to Maggie Hawkins, Shell spokesperson, with construction to begin soon afterwards.
In accepting the check, Commissioner Pat Farrell said that he was very pleased with the news about the plant expansion, and said that
he believed this project has “international implications. When Europe is dependent on Russia, we and distribute (natural gas) to a friendly continent and help calm international tensions.”
Commissioner Thomas echoed her support, saying that she was “very hopeful that everything turns out well (with FERC.) This opens the
door to a lot of people… and it challenges them to step up and be ready. This is a help,” she said
