South Carolina exports top $19.8 billion Thursday, 19 March 2009 SCBIZ Daily Staff
COLUMBIA -- South Carolina’s exports totaled more than $19.8 billion in goods sold to 193 countries in 2008 the S.C. Department of Commerce and the State Ports Authority announced Wednesday. The state’s exports increased 19.65% from 2007.
The growth in exports ranked South Carolina number 18 out of the 54 states and U.S. territories and third in the Southeast for 2008.
Some of the state’s top export industries last year included vehicles, machinery, rubber, plastics, organic chemicals and optics and medical equipment.
“South Carolina’s quality infrastructure allows our own companies to utilize a world-class port while keeping their freight costs down and strengthening their ability to compete in the global economy,” said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.
The sector that experienced the greatest amount of export growth in 2008 was aircraft and spacecraft, which increased by 153%, totaling more than $143 million. The iron sector in the state rose 132% and inorganic chemical exports were up 69%.
Germany remained South Carolina’s No. 1 export market in 2008, purchasing more than $4.78 billion in products, and Saudi Arabia was the state’s highest growth market, up 405%.
Other countries in the state’s top 10 markets in 2008 included Canada, Mexico, the United kingdom, China, France, Australia, Belgium, Japan and Brazil.
“Goods made and grown in South Carolina are finding markets around the world through our state’s ports,” said John F. Hassell, interim president and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. “Companies throughout the state are finding export opportunities and are successfully selling across the globe.”
The Commerce Department plans to conduct a trade missions in the coming months to Eastern Europe, Colombia and Panama to introduce small- and mid- sized state companies to buyers in international markets.
