The JOURNAL of COMMERCE ONLINE

An initial International Longshoremen's Association contract proposal for
Atlantic and Gulf dockworkers was rejected as too expensive by
representatives of waterfront management, which will counter with a
proposal of its own.

The ILA and United States Maritime Alliance, the umbrella gro

up for employers, are meeting in Orlando this week in the opening round
of talks for a contract to replace the current six-year agreement, which
expires Sept. 30, 2010.

The union presented an initial proposal for a new contract that would
take effect immediately upon ratification and continue into 2013. USMX
representatives rejected it Wednesday and were expected to present their
initial offer Thursday.

The ILA proposal included wage increases, combination of the three tiers
in the current medical plan, a "bridge" that would allow new hires to
graduate to the higher pay of experienced workers, and an end to caps on
container royalties that provide annual bonuses to dockworkers. The
proposal also included language on work jurisdiction and safety.
