SPA officials upbeat after Maersk talks
By Allyson Bird (Contact)

State Ports Authority officials emerged from a meeting with container
carrier Maersk Line on Monday feeling "positive" about negotiations,
according to SPA interim chief executive John Hassell.

Hassell and three other port representatives traveled to the Danish
shipping line's corporate office in Charlotte to present their half of a
cost-saving proposal designed to keep Maersk's business at the Port of
Charleston.

"We finished the meeting feeling like it was a good session," Hassell
said, adding cautiously that Maersk representatives did not commit to
anything.

The company announced in December its plan to depart the port after it
could not reach a new arrangement that suited both the SPA and the
International Longshoremen's Association.

After intense negotiations since then, the SPA, the ILA and Maersk
subsidiary APM Terminals developed a new proposal. Hassell said APM
Terminals, a stevedoring company, will present its portion of the deal as
early as today.

From there Maersk will put the complete proposal into a computer program
that will determine whether it meets the company's financial goals.

Maersk is the Port of Charleston's largest customer.

The company announced last week that its South Atlantic Express Service,
which accounts for two of the company's seven weekly calls, would
relocate to Savannah, and Wilmington, N.C. Another service, WestMed, will
relocate to Savannah and Norfolk, Va., because of a vessel-sharing
agreement with a French carrier.
