Maersk South Atlantic service going to N.C., Georgia
Staff Report Published Feb. 4, 2009
Making good on an earlier promise, Maersk Line announced Tuesday that its South Atlantic Express service will stopping calling on the Port of Charleston starting March 3.
Instead, the service will route local cargo through the Port of Savannah and the Port of Wilmington, N.C.
The route changes are in line with Maersk’s decision to stop its business with the S.C. State Ports Authority by the end of 2010. Local maritime officials remain optimistic that they can reach an agreement to keep the company here. Negotiations are continuing today, SPA spokesman Byron Miller said.
In a news release, the Danish company said the addition of the two port calls and schedule adjustments are also meant to “improve transit times and broaden coverage for this service to benefit our customers.”
A little more than a week after the South Atlantic change, Maersk plans to cut its WestMed service from Charleston, which runs between the Mediterranean region and North America. Instead, local cargo will be routed to Norfolk, Va., and Savannah.
That change, announced in late January, was brought about by Maersk’s new vessel-sharing agreement with French carrier CMA-CGM.
The two Maersk moves will cut the company’s weekly calls on Charleston from seven to four.
The revised South Atlantic Express service also eliminates a northbound call to Miami, but it adds a southbound call there midweek that is meant to provide convenience to the general commodities export market.
Maersk said the moves are “consistent with our efforts to ensure stability within the Latin America-North America trade lanes.”
The service changes will bring Maersk to the Port of Wilmington for the first time. That call entails a four-day transit from Santo Tomas and gate availability on Saturdays for pickup and deliveries in Wilmington.
“We are pleased that, even in the face of challenging times, we can provide innovative and dynamic solutions for our customers,” said Bill Woodhour, Maersk’s sales manager for North America. “The call at the Port of Wilmington also represents an expansion of the scope of our services to a young and growing port of call.”

Proposal outlines to Maersk agreed on Staff report Thursday, February 5, 2009
The State Ports Authority, the International Longshoremen's Association and Maersk Line subsidiary APM Terminals on Wednesday agreed to the outlines of a proposal they hope will keep Maersk in Charleston.
SPA interim Chief Executive Officer John Hassell said the agreed-upon cost-cutting plan for the line calls for Maersk to use less equipment and yard space at the Wando Welch Terminal, where it has faced "shortfall fees" for not meeting container volume it agreed to in its contract.
Hassell would not disclose specific details, which were still being finalized Tuesday. He said the proposal will be presented to Maersk next week in Charlotte by officials of the SPA, the ILA and APM Terminals.
Maersk said in December that it would pull all its business from the Port of Charleston, where it is the SPA's biggest customer.
