NEWS ARTICLES: Jeannie Adame is the living, breathing, latest item on the
State Ports Authority's laundry list of environmental initiatives.

Jeannie Adame, environmental affairs manager for the South Carolina State
Ports Authority

She is the SPA's first environmental affairs manager. And she has plenty
to manage.

Over the past two years, the SPA has beefed up its efforts to reduce
pollution. Last year the agency signed an agreement with the state
Department of Health and Environmental Control to reduce emissions.

This summer the agency unveiled its "Pledge for Growth" Web site with a
trendy green design that details its marsh restoration, oyster bed
recreation and switch to ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel years ahead of
federal mandates.

Most recently, the agency learned it would receive $735,000 in grant
money from the Environmental Protection Agency toward its $1.7 million
project to curb pollution. That includes replacing engines on the SPA's
21 rubber-tired gantry cranes, reducing truck idling time and
retrofitting trucks to save fuel.

"One of the things that really drew me this position was going on the
port's Web site and looking at its initiatives," Adame said. "I'm very
excited to be here now at the beginning of these."

A nearly 10-year veteran of the Canaveral Port Authority in Florida, the
38-year-old Adame calls her job "a balancing act."

"Ports all have similar issues by their nature," she said. "They have a
mission to be an economic engine for the state. But they reside in a
natural environment."

There is no typical day for Adame, who in her first month already has
spent time meeting with community members and finalizing the EPA grant.
She will earn an $80,000 annual salary.

She implemented an environmental management system at the Canaveral Port
Authority, which meant pulling together the entire port network toward
the same goals. She hopes to do the same here.

Adame also expanded children's outreach in Florida. She learned quickly
that the money wasn't always there for the gas needed to bring children
to her facility.

So she made videos to take to classes and coloring and activity books she
illustrated herself and could leave behind with the school library.

A mother of two, Adame said, "Kids are going to be the next generation of
decision-makers, policy-makers. We have to educate them on things we need
to do to protect our environment."

Adame was born in California and grew up in Michigan. She earned
undergraduate degrees in marine science and biology at the University of
Miami and stayed in Miami-Dade County after graduation, working in
environmental enforcement and assessment. She was on call 24-hours a day
for citizen complaints.

She later worked at the Texas National Resources Conservation Commission
and earned a master's degree in environmental science with an emphasis in
coastal zone management from Texas A&M University. She returned to
Florida when she took the job as director of environmental plans and
programs at the Canaveral Port Authority.

Adame enjoys diving and fishing in her free time. She also makes
porcelain dolls from scratch, pouring the mold and firing the dolls, and
she dabbles in charcoal drawing.
