NEWS ARTICLES:
Celebrity's Mercury to cruise into Charleston
By Allyson Bird (Contact)
The Post and Courier
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Future cruise traffic looked bleak, but now Puerto Rico's loss is
Charleston's gain.

Beginning next year, Celebrity Cruises' nearly 1,900-passenger ship
Mercury will dock at the foot of Market Street.

That news comes just months after the announcement that the Norwegian
Majesty, the ship that accounts for nearly three-quarters of Charleston's
cruise calls, was sold to a company that sails overseas.

Mercury will pull into Charleston four times between November 2009 and
February 2010 as one stop in a series of nine-night cruises from
Baltimore.

That cruise and two others that will sail to the Caribbean from
Charleston were all slated to embark from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The two
cruises originating in Charleston will depart six times between February
and April 2010.

Celebrity's location swap doesn't mark the cruise line's first trip to
Charleston. The Miami-based company offered similar 10- and 11-night
itineraries departing from the local passenger terminal as recently as
2003.

Its ship Galaxy, recently sold to another company, illegally docked in
Charleston in 2004 when it failed to file notice within a day of its
arrival. Celebrity blamed a computer glitch for the tardy manifest.

Mercury, the ship headed for Charleston next year, had a face-lift in
2007 that included a transformed "boutique boulevard" with a skin-care
specialist and an appointment-only jewelry store.

It can hold about 400 more passengers than the Norwegian Majesty, which
accounts for 21 of the 29 cruise-ship calls planned for Charleston in
2009.

The Norwegian Majesty is the only luxury liner that has a contract with
the State Ports Authority, but its schedule here does not extend beyond
May.

Donna Hill, president of Abbott & Hill Travel, said panicked travel
agents began writing letters to corporate cruise offices trying to bring
ships here after the Norwegian Majesty announcement.

"We, the travel community, have been begging for a new opportunity," said
Hill.

"It's good for the entire state and the Southeast," she said. "With air
travel being what it is today, people are looking for ports they can
drive to."

Ports authority public relations director Byron Miller said the SPA held
meetings with a number of cruise lines following the Norwegian Majesty
announcement.

"We're looking forward to bringing in new cruise business," Miller said,
pointing to the success of existing luxury liner calls.

But cruise traffic accounts for less than 1 percent of port business, and
tourism experts say cruises bring in only about 1 percent of Charleston's
visitors. They do, however, bring in first-time tourists who tend to
patronize more local attractions, said Helen Hill, executive director of
the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Port officials have reported record cruise calls this year, with 50
expected by year's end, up from 44 in 2007.
