GPA closes FY2012 with big numbers

The Georgia Ports Authority ended fiscal 2012 last month with record volumes in tonnage, containers and autos. The port was only 18,000 short of moving 3 million 20-foot containers, while auto and machinery units came in over the half-million
mark for the year.
“All in all, considering the weakness in the U.S. economy in the last 12 months and the continued economic weakness globally, we finished the fiscal year in strong fashion,” GPA executive director Curtis Foltz told his board Monday.
June was an especially strong month, compared year-over-year, he said, with a 5.5 percent increase in containers, a 9 percent increase in total tonnage, a 9 percent increase in break-bulk and a 32 percent bump in auto and machinery units
handled.
Total tonnage in June was the highest monthly total ever reported at GPA.
For the year, containers grew to more than 2.9 million, up 2 percent from 2011 and an all-time record for the ports.
Tonnage for fiscal 2012 was a record-setting 26.5 million tons, up 2 percent; break-bulk was up nearly 16 percent and auto and machinery units handled were up more than 19 percent.
New board chairman Robert Jepson was particularly impressed with the auto and machinery numbers.
“This double-digit growth emphasizes Georgia’s role as an important corridor in global trade,” Jepson said. “Handling more than half-a-million units in a single year is clear evidence of the efficiency and reliability of service our customers
enjoy.”
Revenue for June was also strong, with $25.4 million representing a year-over-year increase of 3.7 percent and 4.2 percent more than budgeted.
For the year, the authority reported $283.5 million in revenue, an increase of 6.4 percent over FY2011 and an all-time record for the authority.
“In addition to record container volumes, auto/machinery activity and overall tonnage, the strong full-year revenue was driven by increased container-related activity in refrigerated and intermodal volumes,” Foltz said.
The Port of Savannah also now hosts the most shipping services of any port on the East Coast, with a total of 40. Total vessel calls reached 2,916 in fiscal 2012, up 2.2 percent.
However, Foltz cautioned, a weak economy continues to make the overall outlook going into the new fiscal year, which began July 1, extremely fragile.
For the first half of fiscal 2013, consumer spending and housing will determine the volume growth in container imports, while export growth will depend on stability within the European Union, he said.
