<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Charleston’s cruise ship opponents have filed a federal lawsuit in Washington to seek more federal review of the cruise industry’s impact on Charleston’s National Historic Landmark District.

<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Evan Thompson, director of the Preservation Society of Charleston, said the National Historic Preservation Act requires federal agencies to consult with state and local preservation groups before issuing permits.

<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">The lawsuit alleges the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers improperly classified the State Port Authority’s $35 million, 100,000-square-foot cruise terminal as a maintenance project to prevent such public review.

<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">“The Corps failed to undertake the necessary consultations, and we are asking the court to void the federal permit,” Thompson said.

<span-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">This new action is the second legal fight that some Charleston neighborhoods and preservation groups have picked with the cruise industry. A civil suit pending in state court alleges that Carnival Cruise Line has violated the city’s zoning, hotel and sign ordinances.
